CEEPUS summer school „Advanced Spray Drying and Microfluidics Applications in Pharmaceutical Development“ successfully held
In the week from September 8 to 12, 2025, the CEEPUS Summer School titled "Advanced Spray Drying and Microfluidics Applications in Pharmaceutical Development" was held, organized by the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Zagreb, within the framework of the CEEPUS network RS-1113-08-2425 - Central European Knowledge Alliance for Teaching, Learning & Research in Pharmaceutical Technology (CEKA PharmTech).

A total of 14 postgraduate and graduate students from universities in Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Serbia attended the summer school. At the official opening, a warm welcome was extended to the students by Assoc. Prof. Sandra Šupraha Goreta, PhD, Vice Dean for Students and Study Programs, Prof. Jelena Filipović-Grčić, PhD, Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, and Prof. Anita Hafner, PhD, local coordinator of the CEEPUS CEKA PharmTech network. Throughout the week, four lectures and nine workshops were held in the field of pharmaceutical spray drying, microfluidization, and physicochemical characterization of the resulting products. The lectures provided a detailed overview of the pharmaceutical-technological processes in question, their applicability in drug research and development, and the methodology for basic physicochemical characterization of the corresponding products. As part of the workshops, polymeric microparticles were prepared using spray drying in both open and closed-loop systems, and liposomes and nanoemulsions were prepared using a microfluidizer. The physicochemical characterization of the prepared systems included: particle size determination via laser diffraction and dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement via electrophoretic light scattering, thermogravimetric analysis of residual moisture in the dried product, solid-state analysis via differential scanning calorimetry, and rheological characterization through rotational and oscillatory rheological tests.

The CEEPUS summer school program[AH1]  was carried out by Prof. Anita Hafner, PhD, Prof. Mario Jug, PhD, Prof. Jasmina Lovrić, PhD, Prof. Željka Vanić, PhD, Josip Ljubica, PhD and Mirna Perkušić,PhD as well as young researchers Anđela Nosić, M.Eng. Chem. and Jelena Štimac, M.Pharm. The most modern pharmaceutical-technological equipment was used, acquired through the FarmInova project and other equipment procured through Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) projects at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology. All activities during the summer school took place in a pleasant and productive atmosphere, and the students showed exceptional motivation and enthusiasm, as well as satisfaction with the new knowledge and skills they acquired. The overall experience was further enriched by the beauty of the city of Zagreb, which the CEEPUS students enjoyed during their free time in this dynamic week.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Technology extends its sincere gratitude to the CEEPUS CEKA PharmTech network, the national CEEPUS office, and the Faculty leadership for their support in organizing this summer school.
